What’s the deal with marriage?  I’m pretty cynical about things like that… always have been.  I remember thinking about marriage as a little kid and being completely bewildered by it.  “Why the hell would I want to let a girl live with me, and then have to share all of my stuff with her?”  Good question, little FG.   

          Even today, I’m still cynical about the whole deal -- anybody who looks at the divorce statistics would be.  Seems as though marriage has lost its place in society.  But I’ve thought about those statistics some more, and I’ve realized that the problem with marriage is the same one that plagues all aspects of society:  the population at large is made up of a bunch of idiots.

          Too many people just get married because it seems like the thing to do.  As if it’s some sort of logical third step after dating and becoming a couple.  Like they just have a free weekend they want to fill up. 

Guy:  “Honey, are we busy this weekend?”

Girl:  “Yeah, we’ve got a wedding to go to.”

Guy:  “Aw, crap.  Another one? Whose is it this time?”

Girl:  “Ours.”

Guy:  “Aww, do we have to go to that one?  I hate their friends.”

So the problem seems to be less with marriage, and more with being an idiot.  And as for my childhood quandary, I realize I was being a bit naive.  Marriage isn’t just about having to share your stuff with some girl; she has to share her stuff with you, too.  It’s like communism with less cold wars.  Well maybe not less cold wars, but less nuclear-warfare-brink-teetering, at least.
