A New Year, a New Beginning.

I’ve never really understood the New Year’s holiday.  It’s not really about anything.  It doesn’t have any religious significance.  It doesn’t have any historical significance.  It doesn’t commemorate or mark the date of any events.  The holiday simply exists because of the number on a calendar.  That’s the type of crappy holiday a mathematician or an accountant would come up with.

And the most arbitrary part of this arbitrary holiday is the New Year’s resolution.  It’s just a bunch of wannabe ex-smokers and wannabe ex-fat people trying to convince themselves that the entire last year was just a simple mistake.  As if their resolve is going to be toughened by a nice round number.

Person1:  “I thought you said you were going to quit smoking.”

Person2:  “I figured I’d be more likely to quit if I waited until the odometer on my car rolls over to all zeroes.”

Person1:  “Yeah that makes sense.”

And on that note, Happy New Year!
