I’ve never really understood the big fervor about Mardi Gras. As far as I can tell, the only way to celebrate it is to drink more than you usually would on a Tuesday. But now that every other second-tier holiday has evolved into the very same ‘go into work hung-over’ type of occasion, it just doesn’t seem that special anymore.
However, this year we had the interesting twist of hurricane Katrina. So now we get all of the news stations going around and interviewing random people on the street for their thoughts. That’s always productive.
Reporter: “How do you feel about the first Mardi Gras in New Orleans since Katrina?”
Reveler: “Well, on the one hand, I feel this celebration is important for New Orleans to show its undefeatable spirit, and also to pump some tourist money back into the local economy. On the other hand, I’m really drunk and I think I just vomited into a mailbox, so that can’t really be helping things.”
I guess I’m always just surprised to see so many people getting ready for Lent.
